French Meadows Work Study Program

The French Meadows Summer Camp Work Study Program allows people to participate in camp for a reduction in tuition. In exchange for a tuition reduction, the participant agrees to work the equivalent of 4 full days. Tuition for Work Study participants is $545 if paid in full by May 15, 2016. A deposit of $250 must be submitted with your application. The balance is due by May 15, 2016. If not paid in full by May 15, you may lose your spot. If you are accepted after May 15, full payment of $645 is required with your application. If you are not accepted into the Work Study Program, your tuition will be refunded (or applied to camp tuition, if you prefer).

Because of our new location, some of the positions in the Work Study Program are different than previously. See the list of Job Descriptions for positions that are offered.

2016 Job Descriptions

LINE COOK: PART-TIME

We are looking for a professional macrobiotic Line Cook to prepare food to the Head Chef’s exact specifications. The successful candidate will play a key role in contributing to our participants’ satisfaction.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Set up and stock stations with all necessary supplies
  2. Answer, report, and follow the Head Chef’s instructions
  3. Prepare food for service (e.g. chopping vegetables or producing sauces)
  4. Due to the team nature of this task, you should be able to work rapidly and independently once menu needs are communicated. In order to create a consistent food product, you should be able to select, clean, trim, and cut vegetables in uniform shapes and sizes. You should have knowledge and experience cooking grains, grain products, vegetables, and beans in macrobiotic fashion. If you feel you need more detail from the Head Chef, you must ask for guidance at that time
  5. Cook menu items as directed by and in cooperation with the Head Chef
  6. Clean up your station, knives, and cutting boards and take care of prepared food as directed
  7. Comply with nutrition guidelines, and sanitation regulations, and safety standards
  8. Maintain a positive and professional approach with co-workers and guests

Requirements include:

  1. Proven macrobiotic cooking experience
  2. Excellent understanding of various macrobiotic methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures
  3. Accuracy and speed in executing assigned tasks
  4. Culinary school diploma or prior experience in macrobiotic cooking for large groups
  5. Food Handler’s Permit (to be issued at camp)

MEAL SERVICE STAFF

We are looking for skilled Meal Service Staff to serve meals and complete all tasks associated with prepared food handling. The goal is to provide an excellent overall guest experience.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Provide excellent  service that promotes participant satisfaction
  2. Follow the Head Chef’s instructions for serving meals
  3. Prepare full service and buffet lines in a clean and tidy way
  4. Correct any problems that keep participants  from enjoying their meal
  5. Cooperate with all serving and kitchen staff
  6. Bus tables that campers leave behind at the end of each meal
  7. Clean meal service area and take care of leftover food as instructed
  8. Oversee plate scraping and final cleanup of the serving area
  9. Report to the Kitchen Manager for scheduling matters
  10. Follow all relevant health department rules/regulations and all customer service guidelines

Requirements include:

  1. Proven experience serving meals
  2. Ability to develop constructive working and interpersonal relationships with colleagues and guests
  3. Problem solving skills
  4. Service orientation and excellent organizational skills
  5. Active listening and effective communication competencies
  6. Good physical condition
  7. Restaurant waiter/waitress experience and/or food safety training will be considered an asset

DISHWASHING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

We are looking for a skilled Dishwasher to run dishes and utensils through the equipment and put away all dishes, pots, and pans. The goal is to maintain a clean and safe environment for all guests.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Cooperate with all serving and kitchen staff
  2. Operate a commercial dishwasher
  3. Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, and pots and pans after each meal or as needed
  4. Return all cleaned dishware and pots and pans to proper location after cleaning
  5. Clean dishwasher and area at the end of each meal
  6. Mop kitchen floor and clean grill each evening
  7. Report to the kitchen manager for scheduling matters
  8. Follow all relevant health department rules/regulations

Requirements include:

  1. Ability to develop constructive working and interpersonal relationships with colleagues and guests
  2. Active listening and effective communication competencies
  3. Good physical condition
  4. Prior experience operating a commercial dishwasher will be considered an asset

ASSISTANT CLEANER

We are looking for an Assistant Cleaner to help in all areas of camp. The goal is to maintain a clean and safe environment for all guests.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Cooperate with all other staff
  2. Ability to operate a commercial dishwasher if needed
  3. Assist the Dishwasher as assigned
  4. Assist in the cleaning of public and private bathrooms
  5. Pick up and haul trash as needed
  6. Help with the set up and striking of camp
  7. Report to the Camp Director for scheduling matters
  8. Follow all relevant health department rules/regulations

Requirements include:

  1. Ability to develop constructive working and interpersonal relationships with colleagues and campers or participants
  2. Active listening and effective communication competencies
  3. Good physical condition
  4. Prior experience operating a commercial dishwasher will be considered an asset

KIDS’ CAMP COORDINATOR – (Full-time exchange for camp fees)

We are looking for a Kids’ Camp Coordinator to oversee dynamic Kids’ Program. The goal is to provide a fun and healthy experience for all kids. This is a full-time position in exchange for full tuition discount.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Manage and motivate Kids’ Camp Staff
  2. Engage kids in the program so all children can participate
  3. Reorganize program if required so that no child is left unsupervised
  4. Organize, coordinate, and supervise children’s activities: games, crafts, drama, sports, music, nature activities, and swimming
  5. Make certain that all kids participate in a safe way
  6. Conduct a meeting with daily staff at the beginning of each shift and reassign duties to staff if needed
  7. Make sure that the area is cleaned and equipment is cleaned at the end of each day
  8. Report to the Camp Director for scheduling and/or any issues
  9. Follow all relevant health department rules/regulations and all customer service guidelines

Requirements include:

  1. Enthusiasm, creativity, and energy to be around children
  2. Ability to develop constructive working and interpersonal relationships with colleagues and guests
  3. Active listening and effective communication competencies
  4. Problem solving and decision making skills
  5. Service orientation and excellent organizational skills
  6. High school diploma; experience in elementary education will be considered an asset

KIDS’ CAMP STAFF

We are looking for qualified individuals to assist in our highly-regarded Kids’ Program. The goal is to provide a fun, dynamic, and healthy experience for all kids.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Engage kids in the program so that no child is left unsupervised
  2. Ability to lead activities such as crafts, drama, and sports
  3. Make certain that all kids participate in a safe way
  4. Attend daily staff meetings at the beginning of each shift
  5. Clean and put away all games and equipment at the end of each day
  6. Report to the Kids’ Camp Coordinator for scheduling or other issues
  7. Follow all relevant health department rules/regulations and all customer service guidelines

Requirements include:

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE TEAM

We are looking for Grounds Maintenance Persons to help clean all areas of camp. The goal is to maintain a clean and safe environment for all guests.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Cooperate with all other staff
  2. Clean public bathrooms and the kitchen bathroom daily
  3. Clean private bathrooms as needed
  4. Empty public trash cans daily
  5. Help with the set up and striking of camp
  6. Report to the Camp Director for scheduling or any other issues
  7. Follow all relevant health department rules/regulations
  8. Clean all bathrooms and sweep out all cabins on the last morning of camp

Requirements include:

  1. Ability to develop constructive working and interpersonal relationships with colleagues and guests
  2. Active listening and effective communication skills
  3. Good physical condition
